Hypnotherapy for dealing with anxiety and worry

anxious woman with hands to mouth

For lots of different reasons, our ability to cope with stress can be reduced, leading to anxiety and worry. For example, you may face uncertainty about your job, be worried about money, your relationship or health, or that of those close to you. Anxiety is often also a significant part of other issues, so if you are having trouble with stress, insomnia, fears/phobias, panic attacks, being overweight or serious health issues, you are likely to experience anxiety to some degree too.

It's important to note that anxiety is about having a vague, but persistent sense of "losing control", and anticipating that "something bad is going to happen". This is quite different to fear, which is a reasonable sense of threat, related to a specific external event that is within the realms of possibility.

Sometimes, anxiety is a normal or appropriate response, especially if you have experienced failure or loss. However, anxiety becomes an issue when this normal response to difficulty starts to interfere with your usual ability to cope, often making you avoid people, situations and circumstances that make you anxious.

Whatever your specific circumstances, anxiety tends to be a vicious cycle that affects your mind and body, where you start to feel out of control, which makes you feel powerless, and that creates more anxiety. This negative cycle is driven by constantly focusing on anxiety-producing thoughts, situation/s and sensations. When you're anxious, your thoughts tend to be about the same things, often focussed on "what if?", the worst that could happen, being negative about yourself, or what others should have done differently or better.

At the same time, you may experience some or all of the physical features of anxiety: muscle tension, frequent rapid heartbeat, queasiness/nausea, sweating, shaking or a dry mouth; along with feelings of apprehension and uneasiness, and a decreasing ability to cope, act, or express yourself.

How hypnotherapy can help with worry and anxiety

Hypnotherapy can help you get back in control on all levels, feeling more mentally and physically calm, confident and relaxed, so you can do what you need to do. Using the deep relaxation of hypnosis, you will be able to:

  • reduce the physical impact of anxiety and stress
  • increase your confidence, so you can cope, decide and act better
  • easily and safely let go of negative past events, habits and thinking that contribute to anxiety
  • learn self-hypnosis for relaxation and stress-management
  • make life style changes (eg better sleep, losing weight, becoming more active) that support being calm, confident and relaxed
